Do I Need to Buy a Tool Kit?
That depends on how you’re taking your course.
Online Students:
Yes—if you’re studying online, you must purchase a tool kit. Since you won’t have access to our on-campus equipment, you need the correct tools to complete your assignments at home. You’ll also need to acquire a few practice instruments for your course. Together, the tools and project instruments allow you to complete hands-on tasks and receive feedback from your instructors.
On-Campus Students (Full-Time, Part-Time, or Power Courses):
No—when you study in person at CIOMIT, we provide all the tools and supplies you need during class. You pay a student supply fee of $250, and everything else is covered for your training hours. However, many students still choose to purchase their own tool kits so they can practice outside of class and prepare for working professionally after graduation. Buying a kit is optional—but beneficial—if you’re serious about pursuing a career.

How Much Do Tool Kits Cost?
Tool kits vary based on the instrument family and course. But here’s what you can expect:
- Cost Range: Tool kits generally range between $1,500 to $4,500 per course.
- Kit Contents: Some programs—like woodwinds—include a base kit used across all woodwind instruments. Once you have the base kit, each specific instrument (flute, clarinet, etc.) requires an add-on.
We always make sure students receive a full list of what’s included before purchase. These kits include things like padding tools, burnishers, leak lights, spring hooks, and other repair-specific tools. Prices can fluctuate based on suppliers, availability, and material costs.
