BIR 1020 - Brasswind Fundamentals (Spring)

Covering the basics of brasswind repair, chemical cleaning, valve alignment, soft soldering, dent removal, correct fit and function of parts, nomenclature, spot lacquering and spot plating. The primary instrument for this class will be the trumpet, although a cornet will be acceptable too. Large brasswinds will be included as examples of how the repairs of the trumpet translate to all piston instruments. Students will not be required to have larger instruments for this class. Safe work environment, instrument inspection, and invoicing are also covered. Grading is based on project evaluation. Includeds over $1,000.00 in tooling and supplies. (Prerequisite: None)
